Nicky’s Photo Shoot

December 25, 2006

It had occurred to me, after seeing the amazing photos that Dan and Erin’s took with Grace, that a photo session with Nicky would be a nice way to document his early life beyond the abilities of our camera (and photo taking skills).  Unfortunately, none of the photographers I spoke with was willing to release any original photo files for less than thousands of dollars.  Mind you, I fully understand that their photos are their livelihood and there’s little to be gained (for them) by handing out the digital equivalent of negatives – but these shots are obviously for personal use and in this day and age, prints don’t necessarily satisfy the needs of some customers.  Personally, I wanted Mabel to have access to at least a couple of shots to apply her design skills for cards or other possible projects.

After exhausting the recommendations of colleagues and figuring we were out of luck, I realized that one of my motorcycle buddies from South Bay Riders is a talented photographer for track days and regularly documents his riders with amazing images.  I contacted him and described what I was hoping for.  By a stroke of luck, he was going to be in the area the very next day and had a gap of time that he was willing to offer us for an extremely reasonable cost.  We spent close to two hours casually around the house with him snapping photos like crazy.  You can see some of the results on Nicky’s photo page and as you can imagine we were completely happy with the experience.

If you’re in Northern California and need the services of a great photographer (and really cool guy), give Joe Salas a holler.  Just make sure he’s not too busy for us to work with him again.
