Wear What You Brung

July 22, 2007

Ok, so I adore putting Nicky to bed and had just come home from a ride as his bedtime arrived.  What to do?  Well the leathers aren’t allergic to water or babies so they’ll do just fine.  He seemed to like the texture (notice his right hand?) but it was a little harder than usual to sneak out of his room quietly while wearing my ‘storm-trooper’ (as Mabel calls them) boots.   Funny picture, I thought.

We had a nice weekend – spent most of Saturday up in Oakland at the (awfully named) Oakland Museum of California.  They are featuring an exhibit on Yosemite inspired artwork, including some Ansel Adams photos and beautiful paintings.  That was enjoyable enough – but throw in the two other floors of California art and Natural history and it was a day’s worth of stuff to see.  The sculpture gardens outside also provided some fodder for our artsy photos page go check out the new shots!

Sunday we spent with our friend Jen and her daughter Gabrielle.  Barry was fortunate enough to attend the MotoGP race at Laguna Seca (grumble grumble) but after splashing around in the pool and having lunch, Mabel suggested I enjoy the nice weather and take a ride.  Not too many things cap a day off better than a romp in the hills.  Not too many wives are so cool as to encourage Daddy to go out and play.  Thanks hon!!

Movies:

Bullsh*t (Showtime Series)

Magicians and smart-asses Penn and Teller thoroughly skewer…everything.  Profane and abrasive, combative and inciteful – it’s a blast to watch and whether you agree with them or not you certainly have to consider things from an interesting perspective.  I tend to agree with most of the positions so far (John Edwards doesn’t talk to dead people, damn it!) and I look forward to the next batch of episodes.  So should you.

This Movie Is Not Yet Rated

An exposé on the MPAA ratings board and their secretive de-facto censorship role in determining how movies are made and which ones succeed.  Really a great concept – but it pigeonholes into a mission to unmask the hitherto secret team that actually assigned the ratings.  Comes up short of the mark, but would have made a great 60-minute documentary – especially the juxtaposed scenes where essentially identical scenes in NC-17 and R movies are compared where the only difference was the sexual orientation of the characters portrayed.  Guess which ones received the more restrictive rating?
