Any Minute Now…

Man…so the room is ready, mother-in-law is in town and the misnamed “due date” is less than a week away.
That’s right people, we’re almost parents. Holy crap. Parents. Wow. Parents. Yeehaw! Parents. Egad. Parents?!?!?
A couple of weeks ago I said, naturally, how the two of us would be doing something early next year. Then I caught myself and said…no wait, the three of us. How odd and cool that concept is. I mean seriously, the three of us. Neat.
I’m sure any parent reading this thinks “yeah, I remember that feeling”. Sure. I mean, there are a few billion of us on this planet so new parents happen that – every few seconds I imagine. Even so, it’s just different when you see your wife’s belly moving with your son rolling around inside. I can’t wait to see his sense of humor, his discovery of the world around him and how he just IS. It’s going to be a heck of an experience watching Mabel bring our baby into this world. Scary? A little – I mean, as much as I can try to help I can’t prevent her from being in pain nor know how it will go. That and the knowledge that once the kid is home, he’s HOME. Things as basic as running to the store will be more complicated, but things as simple as a sunset will take on entirely new significance when shared with a child.
I know I’m rambling. How can you express excitement, fear, worry, joy and every other emotion through keys? That’s really it – we’re going to be parents and we’ll do everything we can to be good at it.
Enough of my random thoughts…movie time!
• Grosse Pointe Blank:
A pretty standard opposites attract love story, but with a great vein of dark humor flowing through it and grossly (ha ha!) underrated John Cusack in a funny / twisted role as a hitman going to his tenth school reunion. Of course knowing that my twentieth reunion year is coming up in 2008 is a bummer, but I digress. The movie not only is amusing and romantic, and enjoyably darkly so – it has one of the bar-none best kick-ass soundtracks ever. The Clash, Violent Femmes, Queen – they just keep coming. One weird thing, why is Joan Cusack is every damn movie her brother is in? Dunno. Worth checking out at any rate.
• Thank You For Smoking:
See the lobbying industry in all it’s soulless, cynical, manipulative splendor – and love it. Quite a bizarre premise, but watching the perfectly cast Aaron Eckhart equate the health effects of cigarettes to cheese and it not sounding absurd is wickedly funny. Rarely does one see how the PR departments of tobacco likely function portrayed without condemnation – but hey someone has to do it, right? You’ll laugh and be just a wee bit disgusted by yourself for doing so.
