Moms Rule
October 13, 2006
Dad here again kid…it’s been a little while and in that time you’re grown like CRAZY. What used to be subtle hints of your presence have become mule-like kicks and the tiny movement we could barely detect are now visible as belly waves under clothes.
As you get bigger and closer to joining us out here, I have to give you another critical lesson – your Mom rules.
I don’t care how many times I pick you up, things I fix, problems I help with – nothing I will ever do will measure up to what your Mom has already done and will do for you. She has experienced dramatic changes to her own body on your behalf – uncomfortable, painful and generally overwhelming changes and she doesn’t complain. She endures your growing kicks and pokes with absolute patience and if anything pride. She woke up in the middle of the night (hopefully just this once, but likely not) with cramps in her legs – when you play soccer you’ll probably find out how much those suck – and apologizes for waking me up.
That woman is tougher and more tender than you can ever imagine. She has spent seven months (so far) loving you like nobody else ever can. Her self is in you and you can never forget that. There will be days when you’ll be frustrated at her – maybe as an infant when you’re hungry and she can’t nurse you as soon as you want….maybe as a teenager when she says no to something you want to do. It does not matter. You should always treat her with respect, love and kindness. Not out of guilt, not even because I tell you to – but because you know to show respect to the one person that gave more than you can imagine to bring you life.
There were times when I looked at my parents with resentment. I was trying to find my path, just as you will. We will hopefully have the same good judgement to say no when we should (like our parents did). Things we’ll do to keep you safe or on the right path may not make sense now, or for years – but one day, when you have a child coming you’ll hopefully realize how there is a bond that transcends everything. Your mother and I will do everything we can to help you and that will include things that will tick you off. No matter what you may think, we will love you more than you can possibly comprehend. Especially your mother – she’s always going to be on your side. Treat her that way – she deserves it.
